Help The Police Take A Bite Out Of Crime

One of the precepts of my life is "You can't bitch if you don't vote," and the same applies to safety in our city. The RPD is distributing surveys to help them better address issues in your neighborhood, identify problems they may not be aware of, and gather your input on specific crime concerns in your area.

Each police sector is passing these surveys out to neighborhood associations (I got mine through the Museum District Association) and the RPD will be hosting a meeting in each sector. They want your input so they can address these issues at the upcoming meetings.

You can download (pdf) a survey here and print it out; to find which police sector you reside in, click here for the Police sector map. The time and place of each meeting will be announced soon, so check with your neighborhood association or Precinct and get those surveys filled out! (Be sure to put your own sector number in the required blank)

As if Chief Monroe isn't kicking enough tail and taking enough names, he wants to do more to make this city a safer place and beat crime back before it becomes a problem.

His proactive action from day one has been a positive force on this city and a shining example to the 17th floor of city hall (Schools) as to how bold decisive action leads to noticeable and jaw dropping results.

If you need more proof, listen to his interview (with his boss, the Mayor) last week on WRVA.

Or read the article from the other day that details 12 arrests and the hunt for more in a drug bust on Northside (the second in a month).

The more than 50 officers involved in the crackdown on crack arrested 12 suspects on various drug-related charges, seized 250 grams of crack cocaine valued at more than $25,000 and confiscated three guns, including a sawed-off shotgun.

Or check out the Officer of the Month for July 2007: Officer Deane Waite Sector 112
- Arrested a suspect with six felony warrants
- Made 38 total arrests
- Served 32 warrants

- Caught two suspects during an in-progress burglary
- Arrested a suspect that had eight warrants for various sexual offenses

Chief Monroe hired RoboCop!

Check out some of the previous officers' feats and know that we are not paying these guys enough.

It's not all a bed of roses, of course. Poverty and lack of/poor education are the biggest incubators of crime and we have to do more to improve our city in that regard, but the police are doing their job and doing it well.

RVA Foodie has an excellent post (highly recommended reading) on some recent trouble in otherwise placid Byrd Park. I know he will be filling out a survey because we all need to do as much as we can to help the police.

The Police are listening and now is your chance. Get on it, or your opportunity to complain is null and void.

PS - You can also take a different (and anonymous) survey online on the RPD web site that goes into more detail.

UPDATE: Ross at West of the Boulevard News has created an online survey if you prefer.
