Get Tangled Up In Yarn On Saturday Night
One of my favorite new bands discovered and seen just last month is coming back Saturday night to Cary St. Cafe.
The band Yarn is an addictive mix of bluegrass, altcountry, Americana, and the Dead with funny and clever lyrics, all led by charismatic frontman Blake Christiana who before he plays a note can regale you with tales of the Big Apple, international travels, and various foreign criminal justice procedures.
You are pleasantly surprised when you discover the band hails from the burrough of Brooklyn and you scratch your head just like when you find out CCR was from San Francisco and was not born in a Mississippi swamp.
The sound does not match the address but you don't really mind because the music is what counts and these guys know how to play. If you even remotely like John Prine/folk, or feel the inner groove to dance at the sound of an electric mandolin, or just enjoy listening to guys playing good music and having fun, then you should try and make plans to be at Cary St. Cafe Saturday night.
If you love those genres then attendance should be mandatory. Last month I blatantly exceeded my bedtime with a pack of friends and stayed out until just shy of closing time which is about as common as a Bigfoot sighting - it does happen, but not very often.
Check out Yarn's myspace site (listen to "The Early Show" and the excellent cover of John Prine's "Christmas in Prison") or their regular web site which has several great live shows. Click on the Music tab and they have several shows from their regular gig at Kenny's Castaway in Brooklyn. The August 27 show is my personal fave.
If you can't make it or need some prodding, here are some videos from the show last month. Hope to see you there! Click here for show details.
